Carrefour (Crossroads) – Here and abroad

A meeting place for old and new Montrealers

Libraries possess millions of documents in several languages, on both paper and electronic media. They also offer services and programs that facilitate the integration of both long-time Montrealers and new arrivals by making it a pleasure for them to discover their new society, become involved in it and enrich it through their contribution.

You can learn more about the Montréal Public Libraries Network by visiting the Web site!

Learning another language

Network libraries facilitate learning another language with their language-learning collections, Internet-based courses, newspapers and magazines in other languages as well as radio and television programs from around the world.

Original language collections

Between them, the Mile End multicultural library, the IIM library and the libraries of Côte des Neiges, Rivière des Prairies, Plateau Mont-Royal and Park Extension has collections in 18 languages.

Shanghai Collection

The collection is a gift from the Shanghai Municipal Library. All the books deal with China: there are books in Mandarin, some classics and fairy tales in both English and Mandarin, and other works in French, Japanese and German. The collection also includes a book of photographs of Shanghai.

New Arrivals

There are many resources available to help people feel like they are a part of Québec society: the New Arrivals collection contains a wide range of practical information; integration programs such as Contact, le plaisir des livres (Contact, the joy of reading) and Mots partagés (Shared words); a special section devoted to employment, study programs and careers, and a Canadian Citizenship Test guide.
